Changed by the Truth

I was 15 when I had my encounter with the truth.  A group of university students held a concert entitled  ‘Evidence’.  Seeing the joy and radiance on those student’s faces and hearing the passion in their voices as they shared about the difference the truth had made in their lives,  helped me realize that they were indeed, evidence with a capital ‘E’ that Jesus was real! And so began a relationship with Him that has come to mean more to me than anything.

This devotional accompanies the song “He alone is the One ” and is part of the Awakening Series

HE ALONE IS THE ONE

Jesus  is the Way

He alone is the One

Who is the truth and light

Jesus is the Son

He alone is the One

To believe and trust in

Jesus is the Lamb

He is alone is the One,

Who died to save us

Jesus is the King

He is Lord

He is God Most High.

He is Alpha and Omega

He’s enthroned as Lord of  Lords forever

The One who fashioned and created

Earth and sea, the moon, the stars and the heavens

The One who formed us in His image

For fellowship and to give Him glory

I just want to say I love Him

I just want to lay my life before Him

I just want to say I love Him

I just want to lay my life before Him

Scripture Reading

“Moses continued, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.’” (Deuteronomy 18:15,NIV)

Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions. (Psalm 119:18 , NLT)

“The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.” (Psalm 119:160 , NLT)

“ In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” (John 1:4, NIV)

“In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” (John 18:37, NLT)

 ————————————————————————————————————————————-

Jesus often started His messages by saying “ I tell you the truth” (see Matthew 17:20; 21:21 Mark  9:1;11:23).  He also declared Himself to be the truth  (John 14:6) – an astounding declaration for a man to make! Except that Jesus was more than a man.

He also announced that He was the light of the world (John 8:12) and that He had come to  prove what truth really is! (John 18:37,TPT).

Jesus’ claims about Himself were confirmed by many.  Here are some examples.

Thousands of years before Jesus’ birth Moses had talked about a prophet sent by God, one that everyone would need to listen to (Deuteronomy 18:15; John 5:46). Isaiah told of a child who would be a great light  (Isaiah 9:2,7).

Simeon recognized Him when He was just a child, and confirmed that He was the hope of Israel and a light to all the other nations  (Luke 2:32).   After spending three years with Jesus,  John described Jesus as “God and Creator of all things” (John 1:1-3) and as the light that was the life of men.  These beliefs landed John in prison but John remained undaunted in His commitment to Jesus.  Later on, Jesus  appeared to John ( in prison on the Isle of Patmos) and unveiled the future to him, as if to reassure him that his faith was backed by unrivalled evidence.   John recorded all he saw.  We see him describe Jesus as  ‘the faithful witness’ and as ‘ the Alpha and Omega’ –  the First and the Last, the One who holds and accurately predicts the future (Revelation 1; Revelation 3:14, NIV).

I was 15 when I had my encounter with Jesus as the Life-Changing Truth.  A group of university students held a concert entitled  ‘Evidence’ at our school.  At the time, I equated following Jesus with sticking to a list of rules and regulations.  Seeing the joy and radiance on those student’s faces and hearing them speak with passion about the difference Jesus had made in their lives was all the evidence I needed that Jesus was real! And so began a relationship with Him that has come to mean more than anything else to me.

Jesus backed His claims to be the Light and the Truth with evidence – by rising from the dead.  Jesus continues to prove that He is alive by changing the lives of those who trust in Him. Recently I watched the movie “The Case for Christ.”  It’s a true story about Lee Strobel, an atheist and investigative journalist  who was so upset by his wife’s decision to follow Jesus,  that he set out to disprove the resurrection. In the end, he became a Christian for two reasons:  the evidence for the resurrection was overwhelming and second, he couldn’t deny the transformation he saw in his wife!

We live in an age in which people seek to define truth for themselves.  Rejecting the idea of an authoritative source of truth they gravitate to what appeals to them.  Others, out of fear of rejection, stick to what their community believes regardless of the voices of conscience and reason.  There are many teachers who claim to have the truth, but Jesus is unique because He conquered death.  I’m a witness that He is alive and that He changes lives for He changed mine and I’ve seen Him change the lives of many.

Jesus truly is who John said He was –  the true light that came to enlighten everyone (John 1:9, NASB).

Prayer

Father, Thank You sending your Son Jesus to be a light to all people everywhere. Thank You for opening the eyes of millions to see that He is the Truth and that His words are the standard by which we measure every other claim.  We know that You are real for we have experienced You at work in our lives. Our transformed lives are the evidence that You are the Truth. Use us to reach men and women,  boys and girls all over the world who don’t yet know Jesus as the Truth.  And for anyone reading this who doesn’t know You, I pray that Your Light would shine into their hearts right now so that they would discover that You are real, and follow you for the rest of their lives.  In Jesus Name I ask this, Amen.
